Nayma Chamchoun is a self taught writer and poet. Her writing is influenced by her cultural duality. She is interested in female voices in the diaspora community, the challenges they face within both communities and the taboos around mental health within their ancestral communities.

Nayma is an active member of London’s vibrant Poetry and Spoken Word community, the international Poetry community online and has performed her work at several Poetry Open Mike events including the Grenfell 5 year Anniversary and had her work featured on West Wiltshire Radio & BBC Radio London several times. Her published poetry collection  COVID: THE WORDY WILDS OF A MIND UNDER LOCKDOWN is a cultural fusion poetry collection which explores themes of identity, duality, displacement, loss, race, feminism, culture, family, love and the search for inner peace as experienced alongside the effects of mental health, menopause, the pandemic and world events.

Please share your thoughts about the   future of literature. I believe literature will always be relevant and of cultural and historical significance. If we look at the impact of the beatnik poets or the war poets, writers who offered personal insight into the changes and evolution of the world and gave a voice to marginalized groups. For example Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird which shone a light on racial inequalities or authors and poets who offered the perspective of people under colonization. Literature is different from news reports in the sense it is not about the events themselves or the why or how but about conveying a human story and experience.

When you start writing? I started writing as a child, I used to write short stories then as a teenager I started writing poetry and kept a journal. I was forced into an arranged marriage at 17 and my writing stopped for 23 years as I raised my children but also maybe because the marriage itself was conductive to my creativity.

The Good and the Bad. Who is winning in nowadays? The wealthy and the powerful are winning and humanity is losing. Those in power are fueled by monopolizing resources to the detriment of the planet and the lives of those in developing countries. This saddens me greatly because now is the time to try to reverse some of the damage we have inflicted on the planet but all our leaders are giving us is empty promises without any action and inevitably, if the planet becomes uninhabitable, we all lose.

How many books have you written? And where can we find your books? I have written two books, one COVID,: THE WORDY WILDS OF A MIND UNDER LOCKDOWN by N Chamchoun is a published collection which can be found at Mica Press, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Waterstones and most good Poetry retailers. I am currently in the process of sending put my second collection to prospective publishers.

The book. E book or Hardcover book. What will be the future? I believe that digital is the way of the future and in that respect I believe that future generations are more likely to read E Books than actual books. However I still believe that actually books will maintain a selective audience and do not believe that they will ever become obsolete.

A wish for 2023? My wish for 2023 would be to see humanity start to pull together in our commonality rather than against each other in our differences. Nurturing and caring for the planet and our shared human experience. I would also love to see my second collection published as it is a collection that explores the human experience, transition and acceptance.

A phrase from your book. I have loved this Earth. Her breathtaking brush strokes. A rainbow cornucopia of life beyond the numbing dearth.
