INDONESIAN TRANSLATION OF DEREK WALCOTT’S “LOVE AFTER LOVE”
Happy birthday in heaven, Derek Walcott (January 23, 1930 – March 17, 2017)
Sir Derek Alton Walcott, West Indian poet and playwright, once received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. Laurence Lieberman, an American poet and professor, described Walcott as “one of the handful of brilliant historic mythologists of our day” in The Yale Review.
To honor him, his life and his achievements, I translate one of his remarkable poems, “Love After Love” (taken from his book, Sea Grapes, published 1976) into Indonesian language.
LOVE AFTER LOVE
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
(Derek Walcott)
CINTA SEUSAI CINTA
Akan tiba waktunya
Ketika, dengan suka cita,
Kau menyambut kedatanganmu sendiri
di muka pintumu, di hadapan cerminmu,
yang masing-masing akan tersenyum menyambut ketibaan itu
Lantas berujar, sini duduklah. Mari bersantap
Dan kau akan kembali mencintai orang asing yang sesungguhnya dirimu sendiri itu
Hidangkan padanya anggur. Juga roti.
Berikan kembali hatimu padanya,
Rayakan hidupmu.
