Welcome to PolisFreePress. Introduce the band in few words.
We are the band DARK SKY from Germany, we play melodic metal and have released seven studio albums and a live DVD in the last few years. We love playing live, both at festivals and on tour with other bands across Europe.
When did you start as a band?
It all started back in the 80s at school when a few boys formed a band and wanted to become rock stars like their idols from AC/DC, Judas Priest and the Scorpions.
What is your first musical memory?
My personal first musical memory was as a trumpet player in the youth orchestra, ha, ha, ha. But as a “rock musician” I still remember the time when, at the age of 15, we rehearsed in the afternoons in an equipment room next to the changing rooms of the school sports hall and students regularly watched.
Who are the members of the band?
Steff Grimm on drums, Francesco Pisana on bass, Harold Merkx on keyboards and guitar, Kevin Kurtz on guitar and Frank Breuninger on vocals.
Describe to us your career in music to date. Were there any decisive positive or negative influences?
There were positive and negative events on the band’s musical path. A record company that went bankrupt, musicians who left the band at important moments to retire or a lot of broken promises from promoters and other business partners. But ultimately, when looking at our career, the positive influences outweigh the negatives. We were able to share the stage with big stars, we gained many great fans at the many concerts and we were and still are able to work together with great musicians and producers on our recordings.
Are you “scared” by success or failure?
This is an interesting question. Fear of success? No, I think after everything the band has experienced so far, we are grounded and definitely won’t take off. Fear of failure? No, not really either. But here too there is a BUT, because it is more the fear of circumstances that can lead to some kind of failure. For example, poor conditions at a performance or even illness and force majeure.
Tell us a few words about your latest release.
Well, for us it’s like a new beginning for the band. The line-up of DARK SKY is completely new since this album and the creation process was different than before. Since the band wasn’t complete when we collected the song ideas, I first pre-produced the material with our producer Markus Teske. We also worked with other musicians, such as Hannes Braun (KISSIN DYNAMITE), on songwriting. Musically and lyrically we wanted to process the events of the last few years and that’s how we created songs like the title track “Signs Of The Time” or “We’re Falling”. But of course we also have other themes on the album, such as the anthem “Heroes On Ice”, which is dedicated to ice hockey players. With “Fools” and “It’s Not The End” there are also songs with Christian-influenced lyrics.
Who edits the lyrics and music?
Basically, the band members bring in song ideas, but as I said, we also work with external musicians and our producer when composing the music. The lyrics and vocal melodies are mostly my job, but on the current album we also collaborated with other artists.
What are your future music plans?
There are some outstanding festivals and concerts planned for this year and maybe a small tour abroad will work out this fall. In addition, we are already working on new ideas for the next album and if everything works out, there will also be a single with a music video for the upcoming summer festivals 😉
