Widowed Wind and Namesake River
By Hillol Ray
Forecast revealed a bad weather and fall of barometric pressure,
As the widowed wind, my friend, held me tight by the coattail-
And the retiring herons flying back to evening nests
Chimed their melodious voice without a fear to fail!
The echoes were heard in my elephant ears,
And they alerted me well in darkness after-
While the frightened children in their tents huddled,
As the war horse left them orphan without laughter!
The breaths of morning dews said ‘hi’ to butterflies,
And the full moon’s grace hovered on a juniper tree-
But the torn lonely warzone felt deserted,
And the burnt grasses wanted to be free!
The cavern hollows remained cool in silence,
And huge copper sun blazed the early morn-
While the baby elf on the slope of Vermont hill
Felt hungry and twisted the ears of sweet corn!
Azalea and marigold walk hand in hand, on garden sand,
To usher in prompt arrival of Spring and bathe in cheers-
But the footsteps of the elderly mother mingled
In memories of adolescent fun wailing in tears!
Now with waves of time, the remaining years of my life
Will linger or graze behind my friend, a namesake river-
And the last echo in my poetic heart will pause someday,
To look back quietly where once I stood just to shiver!!!
