Primal Roots: “Gangsta’s Paradise is not a song that you’d expect from a metal band and we loved that too”

We’ll be releasing some singles in the coming months and we’re working on new material for the next record… We just want to get our music out there and get on stage!

Welcome to PolisFreePress. Introduce the band in few words.

Hi! Thanks for having us! We are Primal Roots and we are a multinational heavy metal band based in Athens!

When did you start as a band?

Back in 2019, some of the guys met at work and wanted to start a band, they then found me through an ad on social media and I joined as the vocalist.

What is your first musical memory?

Now this will give away my age! When I was about 5 years old, my dad brought home a cassette recorder for me! I would make up songs and record them on there. At the time I already had a pretty eclectic taste in music and I listened to anything I could get my hands on! From rock and roll to Michael Jackson! Sadly, I don’t know what became of those tapes!

Who are the members of the band?

Alejandro Lobato, from Spain, on the guitar. Amira Debaeib, from Tunisia, on bass and myself, Rachel Cassar on vocals. I’m from the UK.

We’re in between drummers at the moment and we’ll be working with different people for live gigs and recordings on a session basis until the right person comes along. Finding a new member that has the same passion as us is no easy feat!

Describe to us your career in music to date. Were there any decisive positive or negative influences?

As a band we’ve had a lot of setbacks so far but we keep on going! COVID was obviously a big one which affected everyone. We feel like we’ve got ourselves to a place where we can grow again and every setback has brought us together stronger! We’re back in the studio now, creating new music which we are loving! We can’t wait to start recording and release our new material to the world!

Are you “scared” by success or failure?

I think both success and failure are relative, it all depends where you set your milestones. We’re certainly not scared of either, especially not success, bring us loads of that!

Tell us a few words about your latest release.

We decided to release a cover because we had the idea, we jammed it and it sounded awesome so we recorded it! We did end up spending way more time on it than we first intended but it was a lot of fun. Gangsta’s Paradise is not a song that you’d expect from a metal band and we loved that too!

Who edits the lyrics and music?

We all take part in the writing process. Usually someone comes up with an idea and we work on it together to create a song. I (Rachel) write most of the lyrics, often being inspired by the music itself as we create. We love the process and we each bring our own flavour to the mix which is what makes our music unique.

We do all of our recording at Made in Hell studio and our recording engineer, David Prudent, has been a massive help to us along the way, inspiring us to go further and be more creative. He’s like the invisible Root!

What are your future music plans?

We’ll be releasing some singles in the coming months and we’re working on new material for the next record. We haven’t decided if it will be a full album or an EP yet. We’re also planning some live performances and generally lots of exciting stuff! We just want to get our music out there and get on stage! Lots of news coming in the near future so watch this space!
